English for Academic Purposes

Main Purpose and Duties of the Position

Location: Xiamen University, Zhangzhou Campus, China

Hours of Work: 36.25 hours per week.

Grade: 8/9 depending on qualifications and experience

Reports to: English Language Subject Leader

 

Summary of Main Job Purpose:

To be a key member of the academic team of the Institute of Creativity and Innovation (ICI), leading teaching, learning and assessment of ICI courses, while developing and applying innovative and appropriate teaching techniques that develop the knowledge, skills and successful career journeys of students to the required level. Carry out on-going curriculum development and review, including module content and materials, and contribute to learning and teaching strategy. Undertake a range of administrative responsibilities.

 

Main Duties/Responsibilities

Student learning experience

1. Support the teaching objectives of the ICI by delivering teaching through allocated lectures, tutorials and other forms of teaching.

2. Integrate key academic skills as well as knowledge of creative subjects (for example, srt, design, and media) into the English language provision at ICI.

3. Identify and secure the required teaching resources for the English provision.

4. Provide mentoring and supervision to students, giving advice on study skills and helping with learning problems. Identify the learning needs of students and define learning objectives.

5. Supervise student projects, field trips and, where appropriate, placements.

6. Monitor students’ progress regularly and provide additional support to students as necessary. Advise on, where appropriate, the implementation of UCA and ICI policies in relation to English Language compliance requirements including those relating to quality review, audit recommendations, equality issues and health and safety of staff and students.

7. Set and mark coursework and exams, providing constructive feedback to students.

8. Lead the development of UCA English tests in Xiamen and conduct the testing on a regular basis in order to support direct recruitment to UCA.

9. Work with the English Subject Lead, where appropriate, to make revisions to existing modules or courses in terms of design, content, structure, forms of delivery, and method of assessment.

10. Liaise with UCA staff in Farnham in order to develop in-country pre-sessional English Language learning and testing in PR China. Ensure parity of testing standards.

11. Develop own teaching materials, methods and approaches, with guidance. Obtain and analyse feedback on own teaching design and delivery to facilitate this.

12. Devise in-session support that will be available to students at ICI over the period of the whole programme undertaken in China.

13. Contribute to the development of new teaching approaches and course proposals and to the design of curricula which are academically excellent, coherent, and intellectually challenging.

14. Ensure that course design and delivery at the ICI comply with the quality standards and regulations of the UCA.

15. Advise on, where appropriate, the implementation of UCA and ICI policies in relation to English Language compliance requirements including those relating to quality review, audit recommendations, equality issues and health and safety of staff and students.

16. Coordinate with Link Tutors or Module Leaders in the UK to ensure the consistency and equivalence of teaching and learning at ICI and UCA.

17. Work closely with the academic teams to integrate students’ academic studies into the English language program.

18. Work closely with staff from other disciplines at the ICI to offer students cross-disciplinary learning experiences.

19. Maintain active links with industry and professional practitioners and bring these networks to ICI for the benefit of students.

20. Work closely with UCA, ICI and Xiamen University academic and administration teams to ensure that all the work conducted meets the regulations and requirements of the ICI.

21. If required, and within field of expertise, deliver modules and provide support to students within the ICI academic scheme programmes.
