Regional Director, China

Ireland’s Global University, University College Dublin is seeking an ambitious, Beijing based professional for a newly-created position of Regional Director, China.

Heading up the University College Dublin (UCD) Global Centre in China, the Regional Director is responsible for guiding UCD’s strategy for engagement with China and coordinating a diverse portfolio of activities, including raising the University’s profile; student recruitment; alumni engagement; supporting academic & research collaboration, and developing connections and opportunities for advancing the University’s engagement with China in response to the UCD Global Engagement Strategy.

Working collaboratively with the International Dean (China), who has academic oversight of UCD’s in-country teaching activity via the Beijing Dublin International College and other programmes, the Regional Director will have a key role in developing an annual/ biannual Regional Plan and will lead on the implementation of that Plan.

The Regional Director will lead a team of staff in China and in Dublin responsible for international student recruitment/admissions and institutional partnerships, as well as support a wide range of projects, partnerships and business opportunities across the UCD staff and student community.

The role will involve travel within China, and between the Global Centre in Beijing and Dublin, to build relationships with faculty and professional unit staff.

A key aspect of the role involves stakeholder engagement within China and in Ireland, with the Regional Director ensuring that communication and follow- up is undertaken in relation to projects and partnerships, with a clear focus on outputs and institutional impact.

Reporting to the Director of UCD Global, the Regional Director works closely with the UCD Global Leadership Team in relation to their areas of key responsibility – International Student Recruitment, Global Relations and Partnerships, Study Abroad, and Global Experience.

Required Skills

Given the complexity and diversity of the University’s international activity and regional engagement, the successful candidate will require the following key skills:

  • Excellent planning and organisation skills to enable management and completion of multiple projects and tasks.
  • Advanced stakeholder management skills, involving a wide range of contacts at all levels in China and in Ireland, and the ability to represent the University professionally in multiple contexts.
  • A high level of political awareness, diplomacy and excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Effective problem solving skills and the ability to gather intelligence and information to assist with solving problems relating to the delivery of the University’s activity in the region.
  • Capacity for objective decision-making and line management, given that the position is located at a distance and without recourse to immediate support.
  • Willingness and capacity to undertake extensive travel within China, as well as to travel to Ireland.

Key Selection Criteria

  • Educated to Master’s degree level, with at least 8 years experience working in an international organisation and/or higher education.
  • Experience of stakeholder engagement and ability to represent the University at the highest level to a wide range of contacts and organisations.
  • Experience in administration, research and intelligence gathering.
  • Excellent organisation skills, including the ability to proactively deal with multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Ability to operate on own initiative, to be self-motivated and disciplined
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, written and verbal.
  • Experience of human resources and budget management.
  • Fluency in written and spoken Mandarin.
  • Excellent command of written and spoken English.


  • Experience in the Chinese educational system.
  • Awareness of international student recruitment strategies.
  • Previous experience of study overseas.
  • Familiarity with Ireland and the Irish higher education sector.
