Job Title:                     Head of Centre (UEL) 

Location:                     UEL Docklands Campus

Responsible to:           Malvern International plc CEO

Liaison with:               A wide range of stakeholders to include; Malvern Global Head Sales & Marketing, Malvern Head of Programmes, UEL Deans, Head of UEL International Office and Directors.

 

Job Purpose

To lead and manage the day-to-day operations and delivery of all provision offered at the UEL International Study Centre (ISC), offered in partnership between Malvern International PLC and the University of East London. The Head of Centre will have overall responsibility for the success of the relationship between Malvern and UEL and for both ensuring the quality and standards of provision and the commercial success of the embedded centre.

 

Main Duties and Responsibilities

 

1.     Provide both strategic and operational leadership for the embedded centre ensuring the successful achievement of annual and longer term objectives.

2.     Formulate and implement, in cooperation with key UEL/Malvern and other stakeholders, an ambitious on-going, one, three and five-year business plan for the centre.

3.     Develop and strengthen the positive and productive working relationship between the centre and key UEL personnel including academic Deans and/or their nominees, UEL international and marketing officers and key UEL support staff.

4.     Work closely with Head of Programmes to appoint, and effectively deploy, develop, performance manage and motivate the centre’s teaching and administrative staff.

5.     Ensure an excellent student experience, from induction to completion, and the best possible student outcomes.

6.     Ensure teaching/learning, whether face to face and/or online, and assessment is effective and efficient and, as a minimum, consistent with student and UEL expectations and norms.

7.     Ensure the centre’s compliance to all relevant UEL policies, procedures and agreed practices and all relevant external bodies.

8.     Ensure rigorous processes are in place to require student attendance/engagement with their programmes of learning and compliance with UELs behavioural norms, while ensuring that the student voice is considered.

9.     Ensure the welfare of the centre’s students.

10.  Determine and implement, in agreement with the line manager and key UEL stakeholders, an effective organisational structure and communication practices within the centre.

11.  Secure appropriate teaching and other student and staff accommodation for the centre, within UEL, in consultation with key relevant UEL stakeholders.

12.  Establish the framework and oversee the allocation of teaching and other resources, within agreed budget, to meet operational objectives.

13.  Work closely with Malvern and UELs international office to ensure buoyant student recruitment and associated commercial viability.

14.  Work closely with Head of Programmes the effective development of new programmes in consultation with key student recruitment personnel and relevant UEL academic departments.

15.  Ensure the effective management of contractual arrangements between the centre and UEL.

16.  Ensure the accuracy of all public facing information.

17.  Provide regular progress reports to key stakeholders.

18.  Work closely with the Head of Global Sales and Marketing to ensure smooth student recruitment to the International Study Centre (ISC).

19.  Meet ambitious growth targets for the centre in terms of student numbers, retention, progression and operating costs.

20.  Manage all ISC staff either directly or through dotted line management, and to ensure that year performance appraisals are completed in line with HR guidelines.

21.  Complete any ad hoc duties as required by the organisation.

22.  Be available to work out of hours (including on-call) when required by the organisation.

23.  Lead on any audits on behalf of Malvern International that may take place at the ISC as required. Audits include (but are not limited to) UKVI and QAA.

24.  Manage the operational budget for the ISC.

25.  Work on behalf of Malvern International with UEL Finance team to ensure the smooth payment of all invoices.

26.  Manage the allocation of space and all resources required to deliver programmes at the ISC.

 

Person Specification

 
Essential  

Have the right to work in the UK 

Undergraduate honours degree and evidence of CPD
Successful experience of managing post compulsory age academic provision  

Successful leadership of managing academic staff in achieving ambitious goals

Evidence of having input strategic processes into an organisation that had improved efficiency within the organisation.

Evidence of successful leadership, team working and managing on-going and long term stakeholder relationship

Demonstrable commercial acumen and budget management experience

Evidence of effective and substantial proactive behaviours within a management context

Evidence of having met or raised performance of staff  in order to achieve organisational goals.

Desirable

Qualified Teaching and/or HE teaching status. Higher degree and/or PhD

Successful experience of managing substantial HE academic provision

Successful HE department and/or centre experience in a staff management role

Successful experience of managing a significant budget/income targets within a HE context
 
Experience of running and managing a successful pathway centre.
