The Director of International Travel Health, Safety and Security will work under the direction of the Vice Provost for Global Strategy and Initiatives in collaboration with relevant on-campus parties.  

 

JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

      Program Development and Delivery

  • Establishes and promotes standards of best practice for international travel health, safety, and security.
  • Designs and creates system and process enhancements to ensure that Emory can fulfill its duty of care obligations for community members on university-sponsored travel abroad.
  • Develops and maintains standardized health, safety, and security training programs and materials for international travel and organizes and delivers related orientation and educational sessions.


      Process Improvement and Coordination

  • Works with established study abroad programs and student-facing groups to strengthen support for student travel health, safety and security, with a particular focus on ensuring best practices are in place for all student international travel, including that outside of established programs.
  • Leads efforts to optimize travel registry processes, assessing available resources (e.g., software packages) to enhance these efforts and developing associated implementation recommendations to senior leadership.

      Traveler Support

  • Serves as a single point of contact for the health, safety, and security questions of faculty and staff engaged in international travel and/or supporting student international travel.
  • Provides health, safety, and security guidance and assistance before, during, and after travel to faculty and staff engaged in international travel and/or supporting student international travel; includes assistance with evaluating the health, safety, and security risks associated with particular destinations and activities abroad.

      Critical Event Management and Response

  • Works with Emory's Office of Critical Event Preparedness and Response (CEPAR), Risk Management, and other relevant units to identify and assess emerging threats related to international travel and develop appropriate responses.
  • Manages travel permission process in instances if certain travel has been restricted.
  • Participates in emergency and crisis response efforts, as appropriate, and in coordination with other related Emory resources. Coordinates and manages appropriate outreach to travelers in challenging situations and/or needing assistance.

      Subject Matter Expertise

  • Builds on existing experience to stay current on global travel risks and risk mitigation strategies and drives related improvements at Emory.
  • Monitors current events and health, safety, and security developments affecting international travel, with a particular focus on those that could impact Emory travel and activities abroad.
  • Engages with and participates in relevant professional networks.

      Leadership and Program Management

  • Supports through actions, interactions, and communications with others GSI's commitment to diversity, inclusion, and cultural awareness as expressed in its Values Statement.
  • Demonstrates strong customer service skills as well as excellent written and oral communication abilities.
  • Develops and manages program budget and associated staff resources.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree and seven years of international education, research, operations or related experience which includes management experience, OR equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.
  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Extensive international travel experience, including travel to challenging environments strongly preferred.

NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home temporarily during the COVID-19 pandemic, with intent to return to an Emory University location in the future.  Emory reserves the right to change this status with notice to employee.
