About the Opportunity

 

Reporting to an Associate Director of Comprehensive Advising at the Office of Global Services, the Assistant Director provides supports the comprehensive advising processes and procedures for international students and scholars at Northeastern University, including all SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) compliance functions and serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).

 

The Assistant Director will serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for at least one of the following key areas of service: Employment, Communications, Pre-arrival, J visas, etc. and contribute to a comprehensive range of international student and scholar advising functions: Make referrals to relevant campus support as required; Actively contribute to the delivery of holistic advising, support, and services aimed at contributing to the integration, retention, and success of international students and scholars; Actively contribute to resolving complex issues; Serve as a Point of Contact (POC) for any inquiries related to their subject matter expertise; Contribute to the planning and implementation of international student orientation; Serve as a team lead to support advisors, assistant advisors, etc. The Assistant Director will supervise Assistant Advisors and student employees.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

High level of organizational skills, attention to detail, analytical capabilities, and problem-solving. Exceptional intercultural, interpersonal and communication skills. A proven ability to work effectively with students and stakeholders. Fluency in multiple languages. Strong computer skills in Sunapsis, Banner, etc. Knowledge and skills normally acquired through a master’s degree in international education or a related field; plus at least one to three years of formal experience in international student services as DSO/ARO, including living or working abroad and supervising professional staff. Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident to serve as DSO/ARO.
 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES

 

1) Support International Student Services 
•    Advise students and scholars on F/J visas on all aspects of compliance with relevant regulations through their lifecycle at Northeastern. 
•    Propose resolutions to issues regarding maintenance of valid non-immigrant status and retaining eligibility for non-immigrant benefits. 
•    Monitor international students’ enrollment status and compliance with federal regulations and institutional policies.
•    Maintain knowledge and operational expertise of SEVIS functions and upgrades. Research and understand the Code of Federal Regulations as they apply to international student/scholar services. 
•    Provide excellent customer service. Participate in advising hours and respond to email inquiries in a timely manner. 

 

2) Provide Subject Matter Expertise
•    Respond to inquiries regarding visa processes, document issuance, federal requirements/non-immigrant visa classifications, international orientation, and the resources, policies, and procedures of Northeastern University. 
•    Create relevant communications to be delivered via email, web updates, etc. 
•    Collaborate with campus stakeholders and represent OGS at meetings, discussions, etc. 
Design and implement learning modules such as workshops, webinars, etc. for staff and students. 

 

3) Leadership
Supervise assistant advisors and student employees.
